Never Work For Free

"Never Work For Free" by Tennis // Ritual in Repeat (Out 9.9.14 via Communion Records)

I can’t believe that it’s been two years since the last full length from Tennis? It doesn’t feel that long ago in the least, but never the matter because here comes their third studio album, Ritual in Repeat, and in advance of that release we get a blast of infectious new wave-y indie pop in the form of the fantastic new single, “Never Work for Free”. And it really is fantastic - in fact, i’d say it’s about as good a track as Tennis has ever put out. The new album might not be out until September, but that’s just fine because “Never Work for Free” is a pretty solid inclusion to any upbeat summer mixtape that you might have in the works.

the band in HeavenDandelion Wine

"Dandelion Wine" by the band in Heaven // Caught in a Summer Swell (Out 9.16.13 via Decade Records)

After a couple of years of singles, demos, remixes, and live cuts making their way to West Palm Beach’s The Band in Heaven's Bandcamp page, it’s exciting to see that an official studio album is set to be released in September. "Caught in a Summer Swell" will be out in September, but for now the band has dropped the first single, “Dandelion Wine”. On the new single, the band has mellowed out the wall-of-sound sonic assault of some earlier tracks and shifted into a dreamy jangle pop riff that builds into a shimmering shoegaze beauty. “Dandelion Wine” manages to have the feel good vibe of a summer jam, while also offering up a sweet autumnal haze of nostalgia. Highly recommended. Pre-Orders available now at Bandcamp

Consensual

"Consensual" by Heavenly Beat // Talent (2012)

The boys of Beach Fossils have been my MVPs this year with their band (the “Shallow” 7”) and solo project work (DIIV and Heavenly Beat). Zachary Cole Smith’s DIIV is already a frontrunner for my favorite album of the year, but not to be outdone, Beach Fossil bandmate, John Pena’s Heavenly Beat has released one hell of an album in the form of “Talent” (streaming now on Captured Tracks’ Soundcloud). The album is loaded with sun soaked Balearic pop sounds that blend effortlessly with jangly guitars and dreamy atmospherics. “Consensual” is an album highlight that deserves to be included on any self respecting summer mixtape. It certainly makes these dog days of summer feel a little more tolerable. Highly recommended.
