PERFECT|MIDNIGHT|RADIO // Episode One
I’ve been meaning to get back into the habit of putting out monthly mixtapes again, and as luck would have it, i’ve finally pulled the trigger. Much like the previous mixtape series (Dreaming in Waves), the new series will be a two hour block of new and old gems, chosen to enhance the after hours - dream pop, shoegaze, ethereal, lo-fi, and everything in between. Basically, I want to recapture the sense of discovery that I used to get listening to my local college radio station, back in East Lansing, Michigan, late Sunday nights - when they would pull a two hour block of dreamy, spaced out, lesser known artists. It was everything that i could want in a radio show, and that in turn is what i’m trying to capture here. Some of the material might be new, some might be familiar, but they flow nicely and if you need a late night lullaby, this should more than suffice. Unlike previous mixes, the Perfect Midnight Radio sets will be split down the middle for ease of listening. Each hour as it’s own standalone block of music, for streaming and downloading.
The goal is to release a new mix every month, with the occasional special release for fun. Please feel free to share and I encourage you to seek out the artists that catch your attention - they might be your new favorite band. Thanks for listening. Enjoy!

BETWEEN DUST & STARS // an extended late night playlist
For those Spotify fans out there looking for a late night dream pop playlist, I have a four-plus hour mix for you. “Between Dust & Stars” is a playlist that currently spans four hours (and could increase in the future), and runs via Spotify. Artists include:
Beach House // Radiohead // Brian Eno // The Antlers // Real Estate // The XX // Lotus Plaza // Pinback // Grandaddy // Pavement // Pale Saints // Galaxie 500 // and many, many more.
The mix runs at just over four hours of consistent dream pop lullaby goodness.

TRUE DETECTIVE // A Mixtape Inspired By the Series
As the finale of HBO’s brilliant series, True Detective fast approaches, I thought it would be fun to curate a playlist that celebrates the sound of the show. The music contained falls into the darker realms of Americana, psych rock, dream pop, and country - all darkly atmospheric and haunting. The mixtape includes sounds heard on the show, as well as songs that fit the sonic template used throughout the series. So, as we wait to find the final fates of Rust, Marty, and the Yellow King, please enjoy this compilation who’s creation was inspired by the magnificent world of True Detective.

HEARTS OF NOISE // A Dream Pop - Shoegaze Valentine

Last year, I put together this mixtape for all of the Valentine’s enthusiasts out there who happened to share a similar taste in music. Somehow, it never managed to make it Soundcloud, so instead, I’m going to re-post the 8Tracks mixtape as a lead up to the next mixtape. As the title suggests, it’s a collection of dream pop and shoegaze tracks that deal with love found and love lost. It’s contents span a couple of decades, but the vibe is consistent throughout. Get dreamy and romantic and give it a spin. This year’s mix is en route.

The Faded Nights - Side One

THE FADED NIGHTS // A Lullaby Mixtape

The Faded Nights is a mixtape from a year or so back. It was errantly deleted soon thereafter. I recently found it again in a folder, and thought that it might be a nice throwback mix to share again. It’s aesthetic is one primarily of melancholic, atmospheric, ambient sounds. Music for the later hours. Not music that will make you fall asleep, but rather music that might sing you to sleep if you let it. Think of it as a longplay lullaby. All of the tracks are older, but some might be deeper cuts that you’re not familiar with - whatever the case, it’s pretty music for late hours. Enjoy.

  • "To Cure a Weakling Child (Boy/Girl Song)" (Aphex Twin cover) by Adem

Transmitting Fragments Of Time

TRANSMITTING FRAGMENTS of TIME /// a p|m|w mixtape

Here, at the end of the year, I have found myself listening to older sounds. In doing so, it’s made me long for the days of great college radio stations - or, at least the ones that I use to listen to while growing up in Michigan. There was always a wonderful sense of discovery mixed in with all of the familiar favorites. Random songs that were new to you at the time. I wanted to create some mixtapes that emulated that feeling, or at least brought out the old favorites mixed with some deeper cuts. Sometimes it gets exhausting trying to keep up with the constant influx of new, it’s just nice to get reacquainted with some old. So, here is just under 80 minutes of mix (all sequenced as a single mp3). Songs pulled mostly throughout the indie side of the 1990’s. It’s the right size for a mix-disc, or a song or two short for a proper 90 minute analog. Whatever the case. Feel a little nostalgic. Press play. Enjoy.

AFTER / NOWHERE ::: a mixtape
It’s been a while. Quite a while, actually, since I put together a collection of songs that felt like they represented a moment. Maybe just a moment for myself - a sort of mental marker to help remember what’s recently occurred and to soundtrack what happens next. I’m not insinuating that this is some important collection that everyone must hear - not at all actually. The collection here is filled with pieces that I’ve relied on recently, and used to help keep a peace of mind, but also to inspire me on this next step in my life following a difficult couple of months. Luckily, it serves a separate purpose as well. I wanted to make a soundtrack for the latter days of this season. Music for maneuvering through the longer, colder nights of late autumn. For when the work is done and everything is still and you can breathe again, before the morning. Before the next step. For when you are dreaming awake sometimes. In that case, I feel like I’ve succeeded on both counts, and I hope that you love this collection as much as I do at this point in time.

what do you really want? – how to dress well dj set from a month ago xo

"What Do You Really Want?" by How to Dress Well // DJ Set (October 2013)

Tom Krell (How to Dress Well) has dropped another DJ set from a recent show in Chicago. This particular mix runs a little under an hour and leans heavy on hip hop and rap, less on his own vocal loops and covers. Of course, that’s not a reason to miss this mix in the least. Krell manages to get tons of great material into the mix, creating a straight up banger instead of his more chill creations. At the moment there is no track list, but some of the artists featured are:

Rihanna, Meek Mill, DMX, Ace Hood, A$AP Ferg, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, and with a blast from the past surprise addition - Robert Miles

In the end, you got yourself a fun blast of jams that will keep the party and the heart rate up. It’s all good fun.

StumbleineMixtape - volume 4

"Mixtape Vol. 4" by Stumbleine // (2012)

Criminally underrated dream pop/glo-fi band, Stumbleine have a knack for creating gorgeous, ethereal dream pop layered with glitch beats and warped vocal samples. They also do wonders with crafting killer mixtapes in the same vein. Recently, they’ve gone and posted a new mix featuring their own work peppered with tracks from Sigur Ros, Thom Yorke, Broken Social Scene, Burial, Holy Other, and many more (full tracklist below). It plays like an otherworldly lullaby, and makes for a lovely listen on any chilly late night, but especially under an autumn sky. Definitely check this one out.

LIVE YOURSELF

"Live Yourself" // A How To Dress Well Mixtape

Interview Magazine just dropped a new mixtape curated by Tom Krell (How to Dress Well) which features some samples of some new material from the forthcoming album, “Total Loss” as well as HTDW remixes of Carly Rae Jepsen, CocoRosie, A$AP Rocky, Future, The-Dream, and Melanie Fiona. This is definitely something you’re going to want to invest some time in over the next couple of days. It runs a brisk 45 minutes, but is loaded with abstract beauty throughout. You even get a couple of downright jams.
