Here is where my notes got a little rough. Early on, it was clear that I was having trouble deciding on a top five. I must have chosen every track on “Kid A” at one time or another, but ultimately settled on the track, that I would probably still consider my favorite. So good call on younger me. The Yo La Tengo track is absolutely my favorite from that album, and it honestly might be what I would consider my favorite song of 2000, if i had created this list today. The Crooked Fingers jam is spot on as well. I am still madly in love with that track. The rest is where I would shift my work had I written this today.
The most notably absent track from that year that I would absolutely include later in life (ie. today), would be "The Cedar Room" by Doves. That epically beautiful blast of perfect melody and waves of sound stands as one of my favorite songs of all time, but I didn’t really fall in love with it until 2001. I also doubt that I would include that particular Badly Drawn Boy track these days, but it’s a solid jam and I understand why I was crazy about it back then. Idlewild's “100 Broken Windows” actually has a number of songs that I was crazy about in the autumn of 2000 (and into the next year), but I've mostly outgrown those tracks and don't revisit them that often (though they do still stand up and sound catchy as all hell). I'm sure that if i were to be writing this list today and not going off of eleven year old notes, I would have included “Jed's Other Poem” by Grandaddy and “Dark Center of the Universe” by Modest Mouse, but oh well - that was then, this is now. It’s fun to look back.
